Take a shovel and find a relatively typical patch of cultivated land on your property.  Hopefully the soil is somewhat moist, but if not it may be worth pouring some water over the soil and letting it soak in (or use the opportunity to do a water infiltration test).

Dig a hole in the soil at least the width and depth of the shovel.  From one side of the hole, take another slice of soil, a couple of inches wide.  Try to include a plant with its roots in this slice.

Gently shake the bulk of the soil out from around the plant.

What does the soil structure look like?  Are their soil particles clinging around the roots of the plant in a rhizosheath formation?  What other information can you get from looking at the soil from the hole you have dug?

Take a photo and upload it to the forum, and share your observations.
